Leading During the Pandemic

emerge stronger

I heard Patrick Lencioni (of “5 Behaviors” fame) say this week, this pandemic is an opportunity for leaders to show who they are, and leaders’ credibility is going to emerge from this stronger as a result, or weaker, but definitely not the same.

I want to help you emerge stronger, so I’m reaching out to teams and leaders to offer some simple tips and resources to help you be your best resilient selves – as leaders and as a team.

3 Tips for Leading Right Now:

  1. Remember that physical distancing is not social distancing. In fact, with virtual teams, during a time when information is changing so rapidly, you want increased social closeness and structured interaction. Create and expect multiple check-ins. This could include daily virtual “stand-up” meetings and/or even daily “check-out” meetings to run through accomplishments of the day. One team I worked with recently coordinated a virtual happy hour. Balance the focus on task with asking people how they are doing and allowing folks to check in about emotions and challenges. This is a great opportunity to assess what kinds of meetings you need, and to redesign them. I’ve been hearing from different groups that trust, cohesiveness, and accountability have increased with the use of effective virtual meetings.
  2. Lean in to being vulnerable. Don’t try to be business as usual or act as if you have all the answers and/or don’t have any concerns. Admit when you don’t have the answers. Be willing to ask others for their suggestions. Admit when you share the concerns of your colleagues and staff. It’s okay to speak about being confident that you can weather the storm together, just don’t hide the difficulties and fears of the situation.
  3. Focus on creating a temporary rally cry. People are hungry for clarity and focus. Help your employees identify what to rally around for the next 2-3 months…You can have a message of “we don’t know what’s going to happen, but for the next 2 months, let’s focus on this.” Leaders and teams get a sense of calm, purpose, and reassurance from having something to focus on, and coming together for that purpose.
